Sleepless in Seattle? Not with the Grand Hyatt. So I had to stay in Seattle longer as planned due to my work schedule. So I was looking for a great place to stay in the downtown area of Seattle and it had to be a Hyatt property. To be more specific a level 1 to 4 Hyatt property. I had a free night award left in my account which would expire within a week so I decided to use it rather than letting the award expire. I guess everyone would do the same. So there was the Grand Hyatt and the Hyatt at Olive8. They are located next to each other so the location wouldn’t be the determining factor on which one to pick. Both are also bookable with my level 1-4 free night award. I went with the Grand Hyatt because I had such outstanding experiences at this brand in San Francisco and Tampa.

The customer representative from the Hyatt reservation hotline was super helpful and I told her that I want to book a stay for 5 nights at the Grand Hyatt Seattle and that one night should be the award night which is about to expire soon. She set everything up super quickly and within a few minutes, I had an e-mail confirmation. This is a downtown location and of course, they will charge you for parking. Another great thing most people don’t know about World of Hyatt loyalty program is, that they give you free parking on award nights. No matter if it’s a free night award or booked with points. This is pretty amazing and if you book the whole stay just with points and/or free night awards you save in Seattle $55 daily. Yes, that is the valet parking rate. They have a self-parking service with in-and-out privileges but the garage is not owned by Hyatt and you have to pay in a separate booth and that wouldn’t count for free parking with an award night. The drive from my project site, near Lake Union, to the hotel was short.

I was greeted by a valet and he took down my information and gave me my parking pass and explained to me the process of how to pick up my car. I grabbed my bags and headed inside to check-in.

Check-In

Two front desk agents were assisting other customers and I was the next one in line. I used the time I was waiting to look around and make myself familiar with the lobby. The guest ahead of me finished and I got up to the counter to check-in. Everything went smoothly. They had my reservation on file with the award night as well. Unfortunately, they couldn’t give me a room with a bay view but he put me up on the 28th floor with another good view. Not the best but good. On the other side perfect for some downtown night photos.

I grabbed my keys and headed towards the elevators up to the 28th floor. My room was close to the elevator and located directly above the Grand Club.

Grand Club King (Room 2813)

Already by walking into the 380-Square-foot room, I was in love with it. Big floor-to-ceiling windows gave you an uninterrupted view of downtown Seattle. From my southeast facing window, I could see the Washington State Convention Center and Sheraton Hotel.

After entering the room you find to the left a huge wall closet and to the right the entrance to the oversized bathroom. The closet has an extra robe, safe and a Seattle-special an umbrella. Man, this bathroom is huge. The biggest one I ever have seen. You can put another bed in here, that’s how big the bathroom alone was. In other places that’s the size of your whole room. The bathroom had a walk-in shower but no bathtub. I was asked during check-in if I mind not having a bathtub and it didn’t matter to me. There is a robe hanging next to to the door and they even have a scale in the room. I was just blown away by the whole bathroom setup. That was not even the room itself.

The room was spaced well but compared to the bathroom it gave me the feeling of an undersized room, which it wasn’t. The king bed is comfortable and I always had a great sleep at Hyatt. Next to the bed and towards the window is a little wall switch to lower and lift the electric window shades. Next to the window is a comfortable chair with footrest and on the other side the work desk and 47″ TV on top of a closet. The TV lets you order in-room dining and gives you more information about the hotel. However, some of the videos seem to be pretty old and not made for huge TVs. The clips are very pixelated and made for low-resolution devices. There are plenty of power outlets next to the bed and at the desk to power whatever gadgets you bring.

Instead of hanging the “Do not disturb” sign on your door knob you press a button here inside the room, next to the door, and a red light will turn on outside next to the room number to let housekeeping know you don’t want to be disturbed.

Public Areas

The hotel lobby leads into a big foyer for the conference and meeting rooms. It looks amazing just looking down the long hallway. On the one side of the lobby, you find the check-in counter and lots of seating to hang out. From there you also enter the Ruth Chris Steakhouse. The other half of the lobby leads to the guest room elevators, parking garage elevators, the business center, and another exit to 7th Street. They will charge you to use the business center PCs. Down the hallway, next to the business center, are Starbucks, Blue C Sushi, and an NYC Deli market. There are plenty of options to dine for you at this property and there are another restaurant and a coffee and wine bar at the Hyatt at Olive 8. Besides that, you are in downtown Seattle and only a few steps away from the world-famous Pike Place Market and many other great restaurants in the area.

The 3,800 square foot state-of-the-art Health Club features the StayFit fitness center – a state-of-the-art gym, steam room, sauna, and jacuzzi. One of the most extensive fitness centers in a hotel I have ever seen. The perfect way to get reenergized for a long day of work or play in the city. For a fee of $15 per day, you can gain access to the Elaia Spa located at the Hyatt at Olive 8.

Stay Fit Fitness Center

The 1,200 square foot Grand Club lounge offers a free breakfast buffet, refreshments throughout the day and evening Hors d’oeuvres. There are multiple TV’s throughout the lounge, a workstation with printer and books and magazines. If you are located on a lower floor or facing a different direction, this lounge is also perfect to get some great views of the city. My room was located directly above the Grand Club so it was just as easy of taking the stairs down to the Grand Club. Beverages are for free except alcoholic drinks which you can buy for a minor fee. Access to the Grand Club is granted by either booking a Grand Club Room or having status with the World of Hyatt rewards program.

During your visit to Seattle, you might wanna check out the rooftop garden at Fourth&Madisson or the Observation Deck and the Columbia Center. For now, this is still the highest observation deck on the west coast.

Dining

There are many dining options here. Everything from a Starbucks to Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse. This is a list of dining options you have at the Grand Hyatt and Hyatt at Olive 8.

  • Starbucks (Grand Hyatt)
  • Blue C Sushi (Grand Hyatt)
  • NYC Deli Market (Grand Hyatt)
  • Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse (Grand Hyatt)
  • Urbane at Hyatt at Olive 8
  • Urbane Market (Hyatt at Olive 8)

Non-guests of the hotel can get $10 valet parking for up to three hours with validation from the Steakhouse.

Besides dining at the hotel, you can choose also one of the many great restaurants throughout Seattle. I can highly recommend you to try some of the restaurants at Pike Place Market. Some of them offer a great view of the bay.

Grand Hyatt Seattle

One of my favorites is Salty’s on Alki Beach. The only problem here is getting to it. If you don’t have a car you have to take a taxi or rideshare to West Seattle. (Sign up for Uber with my promo code and “peterr2271ue” and get $20 off your next ride.) On the other side, this restaurant rewards you with great views of the Seattle skyline by day and night.

Conclusion

This is another great Hyatt property. I definitely like the Grand Hyatt brand and so far they never let me down on what to expect or get. Of course, my Globalist status in the World of Hyatt rewards program gave me some benefits here like access to the Grand Club, 4 p.m. late checkout, and one free night. As a visitor or tourist, this is a great place to start enjoying Seattle. You are in the heart of the town. Most attractions are only a short walk away. Like Pike Place Market, the Seattle Center with the Space Needle, and the Seattle Waterfront with the Seattle Aquarium and the Seattle Great Wheel. The prices here can easily reach $500/night during the week. Keep your eyes open for promotions and take advantage of free nights or book with points if you are a World of Hyatt member. The hotel is also very conveniently located if you are visiting events at the Washington State Convention Center.

As I said you can’t go wrong with staying here. I had no issues, the staff was super friendly and helpful. They make sure you feel like a welcomed guest here.

By the way. Sleepless in Seattle with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan is probably one of the most famous movies showing Seattle.
