This will be my last night in Germany before heading back to the US. I booked the Holiday Inn Frankfurt Airport over a week ago. It had the best price, was close to the airport and offered an airport shuttle to get from and to the airport. I thought “easy peasy” and got ready for my flight on Lufthansa from Munich to Frankfurt. Once I arrived in Frankfurt and after claiming my bags, I headed outside and followed the signs to the Bus Terminal/ Hotel Shuttles sign. It was freezing cold, about 0° C and the bus station is out in the open. No roof, nothing to protect the people. It was just a chilly day for me, but I don’t have an issue with the cold. Imagine it would be cold and raining. Perfect combination. The Airport (FRAPORT) could definitely improve here because they were smarter at Terminal 2. Before I left the house this morning, I tried to call the Holiday Inn Frankfurt Airport to find out if I must call the shuttle in or if they will just run all day long and just need to hop on one. But it’s hard to get anyone at the hotel on the phone. I tried like six times over the day and only got lucky once. The clerk told me that shuttle runs regularly, and I don’t need to call for one. Just go to the pickup area and hop on one.

Now i am standing at the bus terminal and waiting for this shuttle. Two small vans with the labeling “Holiday Inn” and “Holiday Inn Express” already passed and neither one was for me. I was expecting another small van with just the same “Holiday Inn” logo on it. Wrong! The shuttle bus to this hotel is actually a big bus which runs to a variety of hotels. I just got lucky when the bus passed that I saw the logo. I grabbed my bags and headed to the bus. Now the bus driver was gone. I was waiting to ask the driver if this one really runs to my hotel. He seemed bugged because I asked, but I just don’t want to jump on the wrong bus. He acknowledged that this bus would run to my hotel as well. He drove off, well more like a race car driver. I didn’t mind because I wanted to get to the hotel and get some rest. We made a short stop at Terminal 2 and after a short drive, we stopped at a hotel. Adjacent to it was the Holiday Inn I had a reservation. The bus driver didn’t make any announcements about if he will drive over there or if I must get off here. I just thought it’s better to walk a couple of feet before doing the whole circle again. Yeah, you guessed right. Just down the street he turned around and stopped right in front of the Holiday Inn. Well, it was a very short walk and I basically arrived at the same time as the bus at the hotel. No real customer service here from the shuttle bus.

Shuttle Bus (sorry for the blurry image)

The hotel claims to be accessible, but how that works I don’t know because you have to take a significant step to get up to the hotel. It’s only one step but you still must lift your bags up or get your wheelchair over it.

Check-In

The check-in staff was quite busy. No dedicated priority check-in lane – not a big deal. Only two people were in front of me. They had all my reservation info and IHG rewards number already on file. I only had to show my credit card and sign in. The clerk told me that they even upgraded my room. I happily thanked the hotel for that and was excited about what I would get.

It also was quite funny when I got the email that I received a welcome amenity from this hotel at around 1 p.m. At that time, I was still in Munich, and it was way before the official check-in time of the hotel. During the check-in process, I was asked again if I wanted the points or the welcome gift. I still settled for the points, but I don’t think I will get “double points” on this one.

I grabbed my bags and walked around the corner straight to the elevators. My room was on the 3rd floor. Room 322.

Executive King Room

As it turned out, I didn’t get an upgrade to a suite but instead to an Executive King Room. It was also a room at the corner of the hotel with views of Terminal 2 building and two walls of the room had windows.

The room was not too spacious but big enough to handle my luggage and still have enough room without feeling trapped and toppling over your own stuff. What I didn’t realize was that the minibar was stuffed with different drinks, everything from water to beer. The best thing, all the stuff in the minibar was free and you don’t get charged for it. This is according to the hotel’s website. Supposedly another special of this room was the in-room Nespresso machine and VIP bath amenities. They were probably talking about the PJ’s and slippers I found in the closet next to the bed.

The closet under the office desk had a small safe inside and the TV was directly above it. It took quite some time for the TV to boot up and load the info screen customized for this hotel. The TV gives you some overview of your room and amenities as well, besides the TV channels.

The bathroom was big, and I liked the walk-in shower. They had dispensers for the soap inside the shower and next to the bathroom sink. Hairdryer and make-up mirror included in the bathroom. At first, I couldn’t believe it, but the tiled bathroom floor was heated. The control box is inside the bathroom next to the door.

The in-room WiFi has some issues as well. It took me a while until I could get it going. I connected to the WiFi and signed in with my name and room number. It showed that I am online, but I couldn’t open any website. I had to type a couple of times http://logout/ and login again until it finally worked.

Public Areas

The Holiday Inn Frankfurt Airport features a big lobby and restaurant area to hang out. The car park is underground, and the gym is also in the basement. Unfortunately, it was closed during my visit.

The lobby level also features six meeting rooms and next to the check-in counter is a small marketplace to buy snacks, drinks, and other items. On the other side of the front desk is the small business center with a printer, open 24h. The shelves adjacent to the check-in counter feature books and tabletop games. So, meet down in the lobby hang out, mingle, read books, or play games. The back half is pretty much used for the onsite restaurant.

Dining

After checking in and checking out the hotel, I decided to head to the restaurant for dinner. A couple of people were already sitting in the restaurant. I looked for a quiet and comfortable booth to make some phone calls and not disturb anyone else. On my way, I passed the bar with two servers standing there. Finally, at my table, I was waiting for someone to come around and take my order, but nothing happened. I had to make a couple of phone calls and after I finished them about 20 minutes later still no one was here to take my order. I was about to get out and head to the bar and ask how bad the service here is, as a waiter came around the corner. I asked her if she could take my order because I was already waiting forever for someone to show up. She took my order and my drink showed up fairly quickly. My ordered Frankfurt Burger took longer, and I was hoping this would be a good sign to get a delicious burger. A couple of minutes later my burger was here also and I was able to finally enjoy dinner.

After she finished serving another guest and walking by my table, I told her that I wanted to get the check. I had to wait probably another 20 minutes to get the check. I was also about to get up and just pay at the bar. I still had some stuff to do for work.

Conclusion

I really liked the Holiday Inn Frankfurt Airport, especially because it’s brand new. The room was great and the lobby area too. The only problem here was the service. Maybe they are still getting to know how to handle a lot of customers and treat them well. But my experience regarding service was not particularly good. The restaurant really has to up their game.
