Breckenridge is nowadays best known for its ski areas but was originally founded in 1859 by a small group of prospectors as they found gold along the Blue River. Around 1.5 million people come to Breckenridge during the winter season to ski and the city receives another 1.5 million visitors in the summer months with people enjoying the mountains and is known for its downhill mountain biking.

I had to visit Breckenridge for business during the end of the winter season and the beginning of the mud season. Mud season is when the snow starts to melt and reveals the fields beneath it.

Check-In

I parked my car in one of the parking spots near the front entrance and headed into the hotel to check-in. The check-in counter is just off to the right from the entrance. Check-in was quick and easy. I showed my credit card and ID and I even received an upgrade to a 1 King Bedroom Suite. A great feature of this property, especially in the winter months, is the covered parking area. Half of the hotel’s ground floor is a covered parking garage which can be accessed with your room key. The gates are a bit narrow but you can make it in there even with big SUVs like a Suburban. This will save you time in the morning from digging your car out of the snow or scratch ice off your windshield. However, covered parking is very limited and there are a few outdoor parking spots. If the on-site lot is full, your car will be parked off-site. One car is complimentary with your reservation, even tho they have to park it off-site. Once inside the garage, I unloaded my bags and headed up to my room. The elevator is near the garage entrance.

Marriott Residence Inn

1 Bedroom King Suite (Room 321)

Residence Inn hotels are basically set up for long-term stays. The rooms come with a full-size refrigerator and kitchenette with everything for you to cook meals. The kitchenette is also fully equipped with silverware and dishes. Really everything you need.

After walking into the room you will see the huge living area with the kitchenette. The counter of the kitchenette also serves as a dining table while there is another smaller table near the sofa in front of the big flatscreen TV.

From there a door opens to the bedroom with a King-sized bed. The bedroom is decent sized but not over spaciously, which is great, as it will be mostly used for sleeping. The bedroom comes as well with another flatscreen TV that sits on top of a closet. Both TVs feature multiple streaming services, like Netflix and Hulu out of the box. However, you have to provide your own credentials to use it, without them the streaming services won’t work. There is an easy way to delete all your credentials before check-out, so you don’t have to erase every account separately.

From the bedroom leads another door into the bathroom. The size of the bathroom is very spacious and has a walk-in shower adjacent to the vanity and mirror. At the end of the same wall is the actual toilet with plenty of space around it.

My room had a view of the street in front of the hotel leading towards the historic downtown district of Breckenridge. One day, Breckenridge had a huge snowstorm rolling through and the road got covered with snow almost instantly.

Public Areas

One of the most impressive areas of the hotel is the lobby area. Perfect to hang out with your friends after a day of skiing to mingle and have a drink or some food at the Base Camp Restaurant. In the center of the lobby is a fireplace with plenty of seating around it. The area also doubles as the breakfast area in the morning. The room with the actual buffet is only open during breakfast hours. The hotel put up “guidelines” in the rooms and the elevators when it’s best to visit the breakfast area. I would follow them, especially during the busy season when the hotel is sold out. There won’t be enough space for everyone to enjoy breakfast to the fullest.

Next to the front desk is a small market with essentials from small snacks, beverages, and some helpful medicine. Be aware that you are here at high altitude and most people will feel the effects of it but only a few will develop serious altitude sickness.

To the left of the main entrance is a ski gear storage room. There you can store all your gear while enjoying the hotel or downtown Breckenridge. Along the hallway from the ski storage to the elevator is a small business center with two workstations to use.

For the active people, you can use the fitness center which is open 24 hours a day, or enjoy the heated outdoor pool. The pool and jacuzzi are located on the third floor and have a few of the hotel with the mountains in the background. This is a great view on a beautiful and sunny day. Perfect to relax after an excessive day of winter sports.

Dining

For breakfast, you get a continental breakfast buffet which is located in the lobby area. You should come early for breakfast as it gets very crowded later on. You might be even unlucky enough to have to wait to find a spot to sit down to enjoy your breakfast.

If you are hungry after a busy day you can hang out at the Base Camp Restaurant in the lounge. It’s a great place to mingle and have a drink but I wouldn’t recommend eating here. The food is not bad, but nothing really special. There are so many great restaurants just within walking distance in Downtown Breckenridge. Heck, some of them are in the building right across the street from the hotel.

Conclusion

The location of the Residence Inn in Breckenridge is just at the end of the Historic Downtown District of Breckenridge. From the hotel, you can walk basically everywhere, even to the ski-lifts. A free shuttle bus is provided by the hotel or you can hop on one the free Breckenridge Trolley to get around town. A big plus is the covered parking area if you can snag a spot. The staff was great and super friendly and always available for a chat. The Residence Inn is also one of the newest hotels in the Downtown Breckenridge area.
