This is the first chance I ever had to check out the British Airways Galleries Lounge at Munich’s Terminal 1. Usually I arrive just in time in Munich to board my flight. This time I left early and made it through security shortly after 6 a.m. for a 7.40 a.m. departure. Before I was able to check in, I had to overcome a small incident. I tried to get a luggage cart and tried to pay with my credit card. I think you already can guess what happened! Yes the freaking cart vending machine ate my card and didn’t even gave me a cart. After calling the service hotline a guy showed up with another cart, but my bigger problem was to get my credit card back. They couldn’t help me with my issue and showed me the parking office. The guy there didn’t really seem to know how to fix it, but he grabbed a set of keys and luckily one worked and we were able to retrieve my credit card.
Check-in and passport control were quick. Barely anybody was here that early. To get to the lounges you have to make a left after security and take the elevator to Level 05. After exiting the elevator walk to your left again and down the long hallway to the entrance of the lounge. You will be able to see the sign shortly after you leave the elevator. The upper level could use some remodelling, it looks old and used and not very welcoming. Besides that, the whole Terminal needs some work done. Just a couple of days ago I visited the construction site of the new Terminal 2 Satellite Building and I was impressed.
At the counter of the lounge, I was the only one to check-in and that went smooth. There were some people already inside the lounge and enjoyed some coffee and breakfast. The lounge is pretty small and doesn’t offer a view of the gate site of the terminal, instead the windows are facing landside and from the furthest corner of the lounge you can see the Hilton Airport Hotel.
Behind the check-in counter is the wardrobe and after that the business center with a couple of PC’s and a printer for your use. At the left side of the lounge is a small snack bar with a variety of hot and cold snacks. They served mainly breakfast food during my visit like toast, sandwiches and cereals. Besides the snack bar you will find a coffee bar and a bar with complimentary drinks and wines.
Seating is limited but depending on the time of your visit you should be able to get a seat somewhere. They offer a variety of german and international newspapers and magazines.
There is one monitor with flight information and there are no boarding announcements. Keep an eye out for your flight.
A big downside at this lounge are the restrooms. They are located outside of the lounge. They are on the same level but you need to walk all the way back to the elevator and make a right.
It’s a decent lounge for a short visit, but for a long layover, I would rather visit other parts of the airport
