Many settlers came to the west coast during the gold rush. Wells Fargo played an important role during that time and still does up to today. Wells Fargo is one of the 30 biggest banks in the world and the Financial Stability Board (FSB) classified the bank as „systemically important financial institution“.
The Wells Fargo History Museum is located in the Financial District in Downtown San Francisco at Wells Fargo’s Corporate Headquarter. This is the site where Wells Fargo first opened for business in 1852.
The museum will take you back to the era of the gold rush. The museum won’t only tell you the story of the bank, it also will tell you more about the city’s history and the gold rush itself.
The museum is housed at two levels of the Wells Fargo building in the Financial District. The admission is free and the museum is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (closed on Bank Holidays).
Inside you see an original stagecoach and you can have your picture taken with it. You will learn about the founders of the bank, William Fargo and Henry Wells.
Upstairs tells you how technology improved banking and money transfer. Like the introduction of the telegraph system and you can test your Morse Code knowledge. You can even send a message via working telegraphs to another Wells Fargo museum.
The museum is not far from some nice “rooftop” gardens. Don’t forget to check them out.
