You think witches don’t exist? Well maybe not, but at least their houses do. You can find the Spadena House, also known as the Witch’s House in Beverly Hills, California.

The house was designed by Hollywood art director Harry Oliver and built 1921 to serve as the offices and dressing rooms for Irvin Willat’s film studio in Culver City. It was moved ot it’s present location in 1934 and converted to a private home. The Spadena Family were the first residents of the 3,500 square feet (330 m2) house and lent their name to the home. In the 1960’s  a second family moved in and made some exterior alterations. The home is now owned by Michael J. Libow, a real estate agent, who wanted to stop the house from being demolished.

If you see the architecture, you can clearly tell why they call that architectural style “Storybook”. The house appears to be out of a fairy tale.

Located just one block north of the busy Santa Monica Boulevard, it still remains a hidden gem in this area. I discovered that house just lately, but drove numerous times up and down the Santa Monica Boulevard in the last couple of years.

Don’t only look at the house, be aware of the little details around the property. For example the sign on the fence “Please don’t pick the berries! The Witch”

This home is definitely one of a kind and the first of that style I saw. The greater Los Angeles area is full of diverse architecture like this one.
