Sad news my friends. If you love a good deal and great museums than the Smithsonian Magazine Museum Day was always on top of my list. But unfortunately the Smithsonian Magazine Museum Day 2023 is cancelled.

What is the Smithsonian Magazine Museum Day

Museum Day is an annual event hosted by Smithsonian Magazine. In the spirit of the Smithsonian Museums, which offer free admission every day, participating museums across the country open their doors to anyone presenting a free Museum Day ticket.

Not every museum or institution is participating. Every year there is a list with participating museums. But this year, the event got cancelled all together. The last time Museum Day was cancelled was in 2020 when we were in a pandemic and under various levels of “lockdown”. It was understandable for 2020, heck most museums and institutions were closed either way, so there wouldn’t have been a lot of locations anyway.

Why is Museum Day cancelled for 2023?

That is a good question. There are not much information.

The official website only reads:

Thank you for your interest in Museum Day. We have made the difficult decision to pause Museum Day for 2023.

Please check back for information about 2024.

I can’t see a reason why they would cancel it besides monetary reasons.

Let us hope that Museum Day will make a return in 2024 with a lot of museums to visit.
