Booking & Stay Details

I had one of my 40k Marriott free night certificates left over, which would expire at the end of the year. I tried to extend it, but Marriott just changed their extension policy at the beginning of December and I was not able to extend it. I also wasn’t able to get in touch with my personal Ambassador at Marriott. I had plans to use the certificate at a different place in Germany but due to health reasons I had to modify my itinerary. However, since they didn’t extend my certificate, I wanted to use it before it expires. I looked for nearby properties and found the Munich Airport Marriott Hotel which was 27k/night for a standard Queen room. There were other hotels available closer to the 40k limit but too far away for me. I booked through the Marriott Bonvoy app and used my free night certificate.

Munich Airport Marriott Hotel

Location

The Munich Airport Marriott Hotel is located near the city center of Freising. A beautiful city north of Munich Airport and Munich. The drive from the airport to the hotel is about 20 minutes. It is an easy walk from the hotel to the old town of Freising and the cathedral. The walk to Freising train station is about 20 minutes and from here you can connect to the rest of the region including Munich.

Parking

Parking is a bit complicated at the hotel and I didn’t get told the proper parking options. You have two options, surface parking or parking garage.

The hotel has a few parking spaces right outside the main entrance. There is more parking on the side of the building on the surface level. These spots cost $10/night.

Directly under the hotel is a public parking garage which hotel guests can use as well. The hotel can validate the ticket at the front desk. An entrance to the garage is available outside the main entrance to the left. Parking at the garage costs $15/night and can be charged as well to the room, if their machine at the front desk works.

Shuttle Service

The hotel offers complimentary shuttle service from and to Munich Airport. It is about a 20-minute drive from the hotel to the airport.

Check-In

I parked right outside the front door. Two people were in front of me getting checked in. After a few minutes it was my turn and the agent was super friendly and nice. The only odd part was that they asked me for my birthdate even though they already had all my Marriott Bonvoy information on file and they also congratulated me on my Ambassador status. The agent also looked if he could give me a nice upgrade and he was able to upgrade me to a suite. He told me that they only have two suites and that they are hard to get. When I made the reservation, they weren’t even available for booking. I was so glad to get this super awesome upgrade. Even without using my suite night awards which will expire at the end of 2023. I also was able to get a late checkout set up for 4 p.m. with no issues.

Check-In: 3 p.m.
Check-Out: 12 p.m.

Front Desk

1 King Suite (Room 181)

The suite is separated in three sections. Each section can be separated from the other ones with a double sliding door.

Living Room

The living space is well sized. It comes with a work desk and an office chair. To the left of the work desk is a wall-mounted TV which can be comfortably viewed from the sofa bed on the right side of the room.

This part of the suite also houses a medium sized refrigerator and a coffee maker. Ice can be delivered to your room by calling guest services.

Bed Room

The bedroom comes with a king-sized bed. On either side is a night stand which comes with a lamp and reading light. Switches on either side of the bed allow you to turn on and off the lights in the room. Opposite the bed is a large wall-mounted flatscreen TV, a window and a shelf for storage.

I loved that the TV came with Miracast, which would allow you to mirror your laptop screen or smartphone screen onto the TV. It is similar to Google’s Chromecast feature which is installed in almost every Hyatt property.

The wall between the bedroom and bathroom is comprised of multiple large closets which houses a safe, iron, ironing board, hangers for your cloth and some drawers for storage. Inside the closets I was able to find two pairs of slippers but no bathrobe. I called guest services to ask if they could bring a bathrobe and additional towel to use for the spa area.

Bathroom

The bathroom is a highlight of this suite. The vanity comes with two wash basins and a large mirror. On the right side is a well sized bathtub which also comes with a shower wand.

The left side holds two separate rooms. One is the toilet and the other one is the shower. The shower comes with a wand and rain shower head. Dispensers for soap are mounted on the wall of the shower.

The windows in the living room and bedroom have no good view. You can see the nearby driveway outside of the hotel. Nothing worth noting, but you might want to close the curtains in the bedroom for more privacy.

Public Areas & Amenities

Lobby

The lobby is large and beautiful. There are lots of seating options in the lobby. The lobby of the Munich Airport Marriott Hotel also houses the on-site restaurants. I loved the large Christmas tree which the hotel set up in the center of the lobby.

Business Center

The business center is located close to the front desk in a small niche. It comes with one work station and a printer. The use is complimentary.

Spa Area

The Munich Airport Marriott Hotel has a great spa area. Guests can book massage sessions for an additional charge. The use of the rest of the amenities of the spa are complimentary for all guests. However, there are some scheduled fitness sessions in the pool area during which the pool is closed for hotel guests. A schedule is available at the entrance of the spa area.

Fitness Center

The fitness center is well equipped with workout equipment. Large windows allow lots of daylight but it is also well lit after it gets dark.

Pool

The pool is well sized and perfect to swim some laps. The water is a little bit on the cooler side which was nice for me but not everyone liked it. There are only four pool loungers in the area and there is no whirlpool.

Sauna

The Sauna area is for guests 18+ as you are supposed to use the sauna rooms nude. The sauna area is separated from the rest of the spa with a frosted glass door. Inside you find a Finnish sauna, steam sauna, infrared seats, shower space, a toilet and a relaxation room for the time in between sauna sessions.

Guest Laundry

There is no on-site guest laundry at the hotel but the hotel offers dry-cleaning service. Bags and forms can be found in the closet in your room. If there are none, just call guest services to have some delivered to your room.

Housekeeping

Housekeeping is available daily. You can opt-out by putting the DND sign on your door.

Dining

The hotel offers multiple on-site restaurants and a great breakfast.

Breakfast

The breakfast buffet is amazing. It really has everything you can think off. It comes with the usual hot continental breakfast options but also local specialties like “Leberkäse” und “Weißwürste”. If you want you can have the chef create your own omelet. Service during breakfast was amazing even during the peak hours of breakfast.

Breakfast is charged extra, if you don’t have a special rate or are an elite member with Marriott. One of my welcome amenities was to choose between points or free breakfast and I opted for breakfast.

Throughout the day you have two dining options:

Loden Bar & Lounge and Restaurant Stubn. The Loden Bar & Lounge is open from noon to midnight, while the restaurant opens at 6 p.m. and is open until 10 p.m. for dinner only.

Restaurant Stubn

Loden Bar & Lounge

You can order room service throughout the whole day. Most of the menu is the same as the one from the bar. I had dinner at the bar and just opted for a light meal and decided to go with the Tomato Soup. It was delicious.

Marketplace

Next to the front desk is a large marketplace which offers snacks, drinks and some stuff you might need during your stay like charging cords. The marketplace is self-serve and you can pay with cash or credit card at the terminal. However, no room charge is possible, which is a little bit sad as this would earn extra points.

Conclusion

Even though my stay at the Munich Airport Marriott Hotel was only one day but I fully enjoyed the stay. I used the spa and enjoyed the sauna. The whole staff was super nice the whole time and there were no issues at all. I can recommend this location if you are in the area and are looking for a good hotel. It might not be the closest hotel to the airport but I am sure one of the best hotels.
