Business Extra is the company rewards program of American Airlines. Companies can earn points with the travels their employees take and in return use these points for rewards like Club Memberships, upgrades and even flights. Companies of all sizes can participate in the Business Extra program of American Airlines.
The points you earn depend on the ticket price booked. During the booking process the Business Extra award number must be entered for the flight to track.
Points are then valid to be redeemed for two full calendar years. During the pandemic, American Airlines extended the expiration date in 2020 and 2021. In 2022 the expiration date gets extended again until February 28, 2023. I am not sure if this is a one-time courtesy extension or a permanent move to make the points expire on February 28/29 of the coming years as American Airlines also shifted the qualification period for elite status. Earlier this year, American changed how elite status will be earned as you must earn Loyalty Points now. With that change, they also changed the qualification period. It used to be a calendar year to qualify for status. The new qualification period for American Airlines status is now from March 1st until the end of February. This would align with the shift of the expiration date of the Business Extra points.
We will see if it is a permanent change. Which would be actually good. There are so many things you have to take care of at the end of the year and the few extra months you get with American Airlines, just remove one thing you have to do during this busy period of the year.
The changes won’t be reflected in your account summary until January 1, 2023.
I recommend you take screenshots of your points balance before the end of the year. That way you have proof to show it in case of any discrepancies.
