Are you planning on visiting Munich, Germany any time soon? If you visit during your birthday, you can get a free ticket to all of Munich’s transportation modes. This includes trams (S-Bahn), subways (U-Bahn), buses and even some regional trains of Deutsche Bahn (DB).

MVV, the local transit authority, is celebrating its 50th birthday in 2022 and is giving away a free public transportation ticket to everyone on their birthday. The only requirement is that you request your ticket online and you can only use it on your actual birthday in the promotion period. Unfortunately, the website where you can request your ticket is only available in German. But everyone from around the world is allowed to use the ticket according to MVV`s FAQ. The form is pretty straight forward but if you are unsure, just use Google Translate to translate the website or words.

The promotion period is from April 28, 2022, until April 27, 2023. The ticket is valid for 24 hours from midnight to midnight on your birthday. If your birthday is in 2023 and within the promotion period you must wait until January 1, 2023, to request your free birthday ticket.

While travelling, make sure you bring your government issued I.D. with you to prove that it is your birthday when riding on any of their trains or buses. Otherwise, you will have to pay steep penalties. Germany is not joking around when it comes to penalties.

I am sure most of you are not familiar with the transportation network in Munich. This website from the MVV has network maps to help you in finding places where you can go. By the way, the ticket is also good for trips to and from Munich Airport. Remember, it is only valid on your birthday. On the same website you can also find timetables for all the transportation modes.

Germany has a great public transportation network. You can travel the whole country for a decent price only through public transportation. However, they made it so incredibly complicated to find the right ticket. I even have problems buying regular tickets at the ticket machine at the station. Other countries have way better systems.
