Facebook is currently testing a new feature in Messenger called Transportation. For now they teamed up with Uber, but according to their announcement they want to expand it to more partners.
To use the feature you have to open a conversation, any conversation, and hit the More-Button, the three dots all the way to the right. Now select transportation and create a new Uber account or link your existing one. Right now it seems weird that you have to start a conversation first. It could be any of your friends, otherwise you won’t see the more button.
From there, you’ll receive updates on your driver’s status and notify your friends that you’ve called a ride. Now you can make, track and pay for transportation all in Messenger. All this updates and information will be sent to you on Messenger in a Private Conversation between you and Uber.
For a limited time the first ride is free (up to $20). All you have to do is link your Uber account in Messenger and request your first ride.
As mentioned, this feature is still in development and according to Facebook only available to selected users in the locations where Uber operates. More transportation partners and countries will be available soon.
If Facebook does it right, Messenger could replace a ton of different apps and you have them all in one single App. On the other side you have to remember that Facebook will then know about all your travel habits.
