American Airlines is changing the design of their Admirals Club Lounges. The airline has two types of lounges, the Admirals Club, and the Flagship Lounge.

Flagship Lounges are their lounges for guests traveling internationally or on certain domestic routes like LA – Miami. These lounges offer more comfort and are bigger than Admirals Club lounges. Flagship Lounges are also harder to get into. I have reviewed many of them here on the blog.

The Admirals Club lounges are their domestic lounges. They are smaller and most of them are due for renovation. I have visited many of them as well on my travels throughout the states.

American Airlines is now kicking off this multiyear project of giving their Admirals Clubs a modern style with the opening of with the Admirals Club at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. Travelers will experience the new design and look of the Admirals Club with the opening of the lounge this fall.

“The new Admirals Club interior design is inspired by our customers, who tell us that their favorite aspect of visiting our lounges is feeling like they’re ‘coming home,”… “This design is the culmination of a partnership between American and an award-winning architectural firm well known for their designs in the hospitality space. Each element was thoughtfully developed to create an environment of calm, with natural woods and open spaces, so our customers can relax and feel their best as they prepare for their flight.”  said Clarissa Sebastian, Managing Director of Premium Customer Experience & Onboard Products.

American Airlines worked with Chicago-based DMAC Architecture & Interiors to create a unique vision for the new Admirals Club Lounges. Customers will be welcomed by signature brand elements and references from local landscapes and landmarks as they step inside. Sustainability is also built into the new design in intentional ways, such as branded elements made of renewable American walnut in every lounge.

Other lounges currently in the works include Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) and Denver International Airport (DEN), which will also feature the reimagined new design. It will take a few years for American Airlines to update their whole network of Admirals Club Lounges throughout the country. They just renovated their main Admirals Club in Charlotte, but I didn’t notice a lot of changes on my most recent visit compared to the one a few years back. It’s still one of their nicest Admirals Clubs.

If you look closely at the image above, it reminds me a little bit about the new flagship lounges of the newest Oneworld alliance member – Alaska Airlines. Alaska Airlines unveiled their new flagship lounge concept in 2019 with the opening of the first Flagship Lounge at Seattle Tacoma International Airport (SEA).

I am excited about these new lounges. I hope they also increase space and capacity and up their food offerings a little bit. Then I would be really happy as a loyal American Airlines’ frequent flier.
